Stinkin’ Thinkin’
Michael Catt
My study is located in a separate building from my office. I have my books and files there, and it is the place where I write books, articles and most of my sermons. It’s quiet and I’m rarely disturbed there.
Last week I got a whiff of something that didn’t smell right, but I wrote it off as nothing. I had been out of town for a while and thought it was just a stale smell from the place being shut up. Yesterday morning while it was being cleaned, the custodial staff discovered a dead squirrel in the vent hood. Apparently the squirrel became curious about what an electrical cord must taste like, and I ended up with fried squirrel in my study. The place stinks!
I won’t be able to work there today, and if I did, most of my work would probably be stinkin’ thinkin’. For right now, the study is off limits to me. Even though I need to be there, I can’t go there.
With all the words being tossed around these days by presidential candidates and political pundits, you might come to the conclusion that they too have been fried and their thinking stinks. When I read Proverbs, it reminds me that how we use our tongues reveals what is in our hearts. I’m weary of politicians who blast one another and then become running mates while saying, “That’s just politics.”
If you call yourself a believer in Jesus Christ, then your tongue, your hands, your feet, your ears and your mind should all give evidence of a changed life. There’s too much stinkin’ thinkin’ going on in our nation today. Everyone’s pointing fingers, but not many are hitting the Word, studying the Scriptures or getting on their knees to see what God has to say about the state of the union.
Just a few thoughts on a Wednesday…
