A couple of weeks ago, AP Sports Writer Pat Graham wrote an article about the Green Packers. He told the story of defensive lineman, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila’s (KGB) pre-season motivational tool. KGB asked Packers head coach Mike McCarthy if he could speak to the team and show a video clip. McCarthy agreed as long as Kabeer kept to a strict time limit. Teammate A. J. Hawk said, “I think any time coach lets Kabeer get up and speak in front of the team, people are worried about the length of his presentation. But he did a good job…I think the thing with Kabeer is at least you know it comes from his heart and he really feels like something he’s doing can help this team.”
Oddly enough, the clip was from Facing the Giants. Our Executive Pastor Jim McBride and I had an opportunity to visit with the Packers last year. We met with Kabeer and even spent some time in his home. He personally purchased 300 copies of the movie on DVD and handed them out to the team, coaching staff and front office personnel.
Kabeer had seen Facing the Giants and was inspired by its message. Back in June before the season began, he challenged his team that they could be Super Bowl contenders. Kabeer’s challenge struck a cord in other players. Prior to the playoff championship game Kabeer said, “Even though I said it, I’m kind of surprised that what was on my heart actually came into truth. And the crazy part I’m surprized that I even admitted it publically. OK, I’m putting myself on the spot to look like a fool. But God, I feel like, in a crazy way is vindicating me. I’m kind of excited.”
Though the Packers fell short to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game, they had a stellar year. They finished with a 13-3 record and clenched their first division championship since 2004. “With God, all things are possible.”
