And it will be especially early this year–March 23. Ash Wednesday is February 6, Palm Sunday is March 16, and Good Friday is March 21. Start getting ready now if you plan to do any Lenten series. Do any of these historical events give you any preaching ideas?
On March 16, 1802, West Point was established. On that same date in 1935, Adolph Hitler scrapped the Versailles Treaty and established universal conscription in Germany.
On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary off the coast of San Francisco was shut down. On a happier note, March 21, 1747, was the date of John Newton’s conversion (“Amazing Grace”).
On March 23, 1743, Handel’s “Messiah” was first sung in London. During the “Hallelujah Chorus,” King George II stood to his feet and remained standing until the song ended. Also on this date in 1775, Patrick Henry gave his famous speech that concluded with “give me liberty or give me death.’
