June 18, 1956 – Dawson Trotman dies of a heart attack while rescuing a swimmer at a Navigators conference.
August 1st – The first United States Census was taken on this date in 1790.
August 2nd – The first airplane was purchased by the United States War Department on this date in 1909.
August 3rd – August 3, 1492, Columbus set sail from Spain.
August 5th – August 5, 1884, the Cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid.
August 5th – August 5, 1957, Dick Clark’s American Bandstand was first televised.
August 6th – The first talking picture was premiered on this date in 1926.
August 6th – The crew of the Enola Gay, piloted by Col. Paul Tibbets dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. (As a side note, my father, Grover H. Catt, was a member of the 509th Squadron, a part of this unit and flew home after the war on the Enola Gay).

August 14th – was proclaimed VJ Day in 1945. The formal surrender of Japan would not take place until September, but the Japanese officially stopped fighting on this date.
