Written in an intense style, the author spends four chapters revealing what he believes to be the basic divisions of the art of preaching. He explores the problems involved in preparation. His four chapters are titled: The Burden, The Man, The Craft and The Encounter. He discusses how to choose a text, how to approach a topic, how to compose an opening paragraph, how to use illustrations and quotations, and how to end a sermon. The author says, “As preachers your primary task will not be to inform the minds nor to kindle the imagination nor even to touch the hearts of your hearers . . . your primary task will be to get them to open their beings to the living Jesus.”
