Proverbs 21:20
God is interested in how you spend the hours of your life and where you will spend eternity.
I. Why Should I Honor the Lord with My Money?
“Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” – Matthew 6:21
A. I am to honor the Lord with it.
B. I am accountable to God for how I spend it.
C. Money management is part of my relationship with Christ.
D. You cannot be a Christian leader if you can’t manage your own household.
II. How Do I Honor the Lord with My Money?
“Money is in some respects like fire; it is a very excellent servant, but a terrible master.” – P. T. Barnum
A. I honor the Lord in the way I get it.
1. Honorable: I can inherit it. (Proverbs 19:14)
2. Dishonorable: I can take a bribe. (Proverbs 15:27; 17:23; 21:14)
3. Honorable: I can work for it. (Proverbs 10:4; 12:11, 24, 27; 13:4; 21:25, 26; 29:19)
4. Dishonorable: I can steal it. (Proverbs 13:11; 28:24; Ephesians 4:28)
5. Dishonorable: I can get it through get-rich-quick schemes or scams.
6. Dishonorable: I can get it by gambling.
B. I can honor the Lord in my attitude toward getting it.
1. It requires discernment.
2. It requires diligence.
3. It requires discipline.
C. I can honor the Lord in my dispersement of it.
III. How Can I Honor the Lord in the Way I Spend My Money?
A. Establish sound principles.
1. Don't buy what you can't afford.
2. Don't borrow what you can't repay.
3. Don't guarantee what you don't have.
B. Avoid the mistakes of others. If you don't have a plan, you'll eventually fall into one of these traps:
1. Impulsive spending
2. Compulsive spending
3. Revenge spending
4. Boredom spending
5. Special interest spending
6. Status spending
