The Revelation Of Jesus Christ (Part 3)

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ (Part 3)

Revelation 1:1-11

Richard Kyle – A fascination with the apocalypse has been persistent in Western thinking.

  1. THIS BOOK IS A REVELATION OF…
    1. Jesus Christ. First and foremost.
      • It is not a RIDDLE, it’s a REVELATION.
      • It’s not about end times STUFF, it’s about our SOVEREIGN Lord.
      • It’s not written to provide INFORMATION, but INSPIRATION.
      • It’s not so much about PROPHECY as the PERSON of prophecy.

    2. Unveiled Hope. 1:7a
    3. Judgment. 1:7b; 22:18, 19
    4. The book begins with a BLESSING and ends with a WARNING.
    5. Sovereignty. 1:8
    6. Blessings. 1:3
      • Blessed when you READ it.
      • Blessed when you HEAR it.
      • Blessed when you HEED it.

  2. IT IS A REVELATION FOR THE CHURCH.
    1. Through John. 1:1, 9
    2. Exiled in Patmos.
    3. For God’s People.
      • They needed to know what was happening. v. 1
      • They needed to recognize the times. v. 3
      • They needed to remember they were a blessed people. v. 3
      • They needed to remember the Word and the Testimony.

  3. IT IS A REVELATION TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND EMBRACED BY BELIEVERS.
    1. It is an OPEN book.: “Revelation” – the word means unveiling, uncovering or disclosing. God gave it to His Son, His Son gave it to John, John wrote it down and gave it to the churches.
    2. It is a PROPHETIC book. Albertus Pieters – None of the schools of interpretation can claim any monopoly on scholarship or faith. Each group numbers many fine scholars and devout believers. Therefore complete certainty in regard to the interpretation of the Apocalypse is not to be had. It is our duty to do the best we can, to study the various systems and accept the view that seems to us right, but always with a certain amount of reservation and of respect for the opinions of others.Scotty Smith – Be careful of our preconceived notions and stereotypes as we approach the difficult issue of the millennium, the thousand year reign of Christ in Revelation 20. Christians have drawn swords in the defense of their millennial position. Men and women who have died in service of the Lamb of God have embraced each of the historic positions of the millennium. Avoid the temptation of being overly simplistic or dogmatic of such matters.Revelation is a fitting conclusion to the books of the Bible. It is God’s last Word to the church before He returns. Many writers see Genesis and Revelation as proper bookends which hold the Word of God together. Both are revealing books. One reveals the beginning and the other reveals the end.

    3. It is a Book Written By and About Jesus Christ. v. 5
      • He is a RELIABLE authority.    “The trustworthy witness…”
      • He is the RESURRECTED AUTHORITY.    “first born from the dead…”
      • He is the RIGHTEOUS RULER.
           From the eternal Sovereign.
      • He is the one who RELEASED us from the penalty and power of sin.
      • He reigns and INTERCEDES.    The King of Kings is our High Priest.
      • He is the ETERNAL ONE. v. 8, 17
      • He is the CONQUERING KING.    The ascended Lord in verse 12ff.
      • He is the one carrying the KEYS TO DEATH AND HADES.
      • He is victorious over all we have ever feared.
