Two Brothers and One Birthright

TWO BROTHERS AND ONE BIRTHRIGHT

Genesis 25:27ff.

Will Rogers – “You can’t tell what a man is like or what he is thinking when you are looking at him. You must get around behind him and see what he has been looking at.”

I. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BROTHERS.
THE TWO BROTHERS.
‘When the boys grew up…’ –
‘Esau became a skillful hunter…’ –
‘A man of the field’ –
‘Jacob was a peaceful man…’ –
THE TWO PARENTS.

II. THE DEAL MAKING REGARDING THE BIRTHRIGHT.

This was no SUDDEN IMPULSE on the part of Esau and it was not a SUDDEN BRILLIANT IDEA on the part of Jacob.

WHAT WAS THE BIRTHRIGHT?

  1. Authority over the rest of the family. Gen. 27:29; 2 Chron. 21:3.
  2. A double portion of the inheritance. Deut. 21:17.
  3. Had the sole right of conducting the service of God. The Spiritual leader of the family. Numbers 8:14-18.
  4. The title to the blessing of the promise. Gen. 27:4, 27-29.
  5. Future possession of Canaan and of Covenant Fellowship with Jehovah. Gen. 28:4.
  1. WHY DID ESAU MAKE SUCH A GODLESS DECISION?
    1. HIS INDULGENCE COST HIM HIS INHERITANCE. Gen. 25:34 – ‘He ate and drank and rose and went on his way…’LESSONS TO LEARN FROM ESAU:
    2. CHARACTER comes out when you are squeezed.
    3. The true test of character is found in LITTLE THINGS.
  2. WHAT DO WE NEED TO LEARN FROM JACOB?
    1. The end does not justify THE MEANS.
    2. People with a heart bent toward GOD’S WORD can still BYPASS GOD’S WAYS.
    3. God’s choices are based on His SOVEREIGN WILL not man’s skills, ability or talent.
      1. God has a sovereign right to choose whoever He wants and reject whoever He will.
      2. God’s choice eliminates all boasting.
      3. God’s choice should lead us to a greater love for Him.
      4. The fact that God chooses doesn’t eliminate our responsibility for our actions.
