Paul was not ignorant of Satan's devices, but we are not so wise. Among his most successful devices today are these:

- Exalting tolerance above truth.
- Emphasizing the head more than the heart.
- Making size more important than sort.
- Stressing the positive to the neglect of the negative.
- Putting happiness above holiness.
- Majoring on this world instead of the next.

Satan’s Devices

"We didn't do this for ourselves, but for our religion. Our religion is being destroyed. Let this be a lesson to enemies of our religion." - The reported confession of one of the Muslims who tortured and murdered three Christians at a Protestant publishing house in eastern Turkey

"Regardless of what happened today, my responsibility was to glorify God." - Zach Johnson, winner of the Masters golf tournament

God’s Glory

"Now that reading has become more difficult, I probably read the Bible less but pray more. Of course, over the years I've memorized many passages from the Bible, and I'm especially thankful now that I did this. I wish we gave more attention to Bible memorization in our churches today." - Billy Graham

"The government may use its voice and its regulatory authority to show its profound respect for the life within the woman." - Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the Supreme Court which upheld the constitutionality of a ban on partial-birth abortion

Doug MarletteMichael CattMy friend Doug Marlette was killed in a car crash on July 10th, 2007. Doug and I would not have always agreed theologically, but I appreciated his work. His humor was biting at times. He took shots at fundamentalists, the Pope, politicians and Muslims. Doug once said, “I have vast experience upsetting people with my […]

Stand Fast

The story is told of a young boy who grew up on a ranch where his father raised thoroughbred horses. It was a common sight for the boy to watch the young thoroughbreds being trained to jump obstacles and race with their long, easy strides. However, because the young thoroughbreds are overly-sensitive and high-spirited, the […]

Flirting With Jesus

(Adapted from Christianity Today, December 2006, from an article written by Agnieszka Tennant, “Dating Jesus.”) We want to be so relational in this society void of meaning and meaningful relationships. It’s showing up in the church. There are books that encourage a date night with Jesus. Can I ask a few obvious questions? What do […]
