1983: Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” breaks MTV’s color barrier after two years of black artists going unseen
1987: Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” epitomizes MTV’s hair-metal era
1989: Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” earns a Vatican condemnation and costs her a Pepsi endorsement deal
1994: The Real World’s Pedro Zamora educates his housemates–and viewers–about HIV
1996: Launch of all-music-videos-all-the-time sister network M2 (later MTV2)
1998: Britney Spears ushers in MTV’s teen-pop era with “…Baby One More Time” in a schoolgirl uniform
2002: The Osbournes premieres. Ozzy later admits he was drunk, stoned or popping pills every day of filming for its three-year run
